Since going outside should now be limited, you might as well stock on food that has a long shelf life and plan your meals accordingly to prevent traveling here and there. One may also think that the best way to stock food items is by buying canned goods, ready-to-eat, and easy-to-cook food items. Well, since we, Filipinos have long been a chef in our own kitchens, we might as well cook real food and stay healthy while we are on quarantine.
I have listed down 4 classic Pinoy dishes that require only a few ingredients but have a long shelf life plus you can cook it in many ways possible.
1. Adobo
The classic, easy-to-make adobo that all the Filipinos love. It is easy to make, it only requires 5 ingredients (pork or chicken, garlic, vinegar, soy sauce, and pepper) and it can also last for weeks. Another bonus is this dish tastes even better as time goes by, “mas sumasarap habang tumatagal”.
Aside from reheating the left-over adobo, you can also make Adobo Flakes out of it. Just shred the meat, fry and serve with fried egg and rice.
2. Paksiw na Isda
Bangus or milkfish is the usual fish being used in this dish but you can also use other fish varieties like galunggong. This dish is also easy to make with just a few ingredients as well (fish, vinegar, ginger, garlic, salt, and pepper. Easy-peasy right? So, what can you do with the leftovers? Fry it! “Paksiw ngayon, prito bukas”.
3. Pork Tapa
Pork is more affordable than beef but you can use any of the two. Just like the previous 2 dishes, this one can also last for a long time. After marinating the Pork Tapa, you can make it into Pork Steak by just adding onions and including the marinade which will serve as its sauce. Or you can do the process vice versa, cook the pork steak first then fry it the next day. Oh, and don’t forget to add a fried egg to make it a Tapsilog.
Ingredients would be pork or beef, soy sauce, onions, calamansi, and onions.
“Tapa ngayon, Pork Steak tomorrow”.
4. Giniling
Last but definitely not the least is this versatile dish called giniling. This dish needs more ingredients but you can make it into a lot of different dishes. Basic ingredients would include pork giniling, onions, garlic, carrots, tomatoes or tomato sauce, salt and pepper. You may also include other ingredients depending on your preference. What can you do with it? You can use it to make Ginisang Giniling, Lumpiang Shanghai, Ginisang Repolyo, Meatballs, and Tortang Giniling. It’s like hitting 5 dishes using one recipe.
Cooking these Pinoy dishes can actually make you enough food supply for a couple of days. Just make sure to buy enough ingredients and store the dishes appropriately to prevent food spoilage.
Here is the list of ingredients that you have to buy. No need to hoard, just store significant amounts that you need. Of course, don’t forget to buy some fruits and vegetables too!
Hope you find this useful! What’s your Covid-19 quarantine meal plan?
